In chapters eight and nine, we see a shift in mood with Colin. In the beginning of the book, Colin feels great depression over Katherine XIX. When Colin begins the road trip, we see Colin's despair gradually drift away, especially in chapters eight and nine. Even though he does not admit his happiness to his mother over the phone in chapter nine, we know that he feels better being in Gutshot, away from Katherine XIX. Although Colin still feels sad over Katherine XIX, he begins using his feelings to do what he loves most. He turns his nineteen relationships into graphed algebraic problems.
Colin Singleton and Lindsey Lee Wells are two of the same, yet each taking opposite paths. When we first met Colin, we had no idea how smart he was. Once we find out he is a prodigy, we also learn that he has trouble interacting with others and seems anti- social. When we met Lindsey Lee Wells, we just thought she was an oblivious teenager from Gutshot. Once we see her caring for Colin, and learn that she is training to become a paramedic at only seventeen, we are opened up to her smarter side that we see throughout chapter seven. Although the two are both very gifted and smart, they handle themselves in different ways. Colin is shy and has trouble making friends. As a child, he was severely made fun of, yet he never changed himself for others. He never stopped anagramming or speaking eleven different languages. Lindsey Lee Wells did. She changed for others just so she could be cooler or more likable. Clearly, both Colin and Lindsey are very smart, but have different ways of handling being made fun of.
In chapters 4, 5 & 6, John Green shows in his novel, An Abundance of Katherines, just how consistent the main character, Colin, needs things to be. We can see this by the way that Colin dates. He only allows himself to date Katherines, and all he wants from that Katherine is for her to say 'I love you'. We can clearly see this when Colin states, "I love you so much and I just want you to love me like I love you." This begins to reveal what Colin wants in a 'Katherine'. When Katherine XIX exclaims, "You don't need a girlfriend, Colin. You need a robot who says nothing but 'I love you'." This citation is clear that Colin needs consistency in life, especially while dating.
In chapter three, of the book, An Abundance of Katherines, written by John Green, we see the more adventurous sides of Colin and Hassan and also learn a bit more about the childhood of Colin. As the two men pack for a road trip, they begin the chapter by asking their parents for permission to actually go on the vacation. They begin their ride in bits of chatter, but then it all turns to silence as Colin looks back at his childhood and the first Katherine he ever dated. We get an insight to the hardships Colin overcame being the smartest child in his class and also get to know his reactions to embarrassment and bullying.
eColin: Colin, the main character of the story, is a high school graduate, who has recently been depressed and angry. He has been known for being a prodigy, rather than a genius, and plans to go to college. Some other things we found out about him was that he only likes to take baths and has dated nineteen Katherines. He is sad and depressed in these first few chapters because he was dumped by Katherine XIX.
Colin's Mother and Father: Colin's Mother and father are known in these first few chapters for their overwhelming love and care for their son. It is shown that they want the best for him and when they suggest he takes his mind off Katherine by taking classes at Northwestern over the summer. Overall, even as Colin does not appreciate their kindness, you can see they still care. Hassan: Like Colin, Hassan is also a high school graduate, but decided to take a year off from school. He seems to be Colin's best friend and tries to help Colin through the break- up by cracking jokes and trying to be funny. John Green was born on August 4th, 1977 in Indianapolis. He is known for his many award- winning books and his interesting writing style. In 2005, he wrote the book, Looking for Alaska, which won the Michael L. Printz Award in 2006. Another popular novel he wrote, The Fault in our Stars, reveals the story of a teenage love story between two ill people. This sad and heart- wrenching story became a movie in 2014. He also wrote, Paper Towns, another beautiful story. In addition to these fine novels, An Abundance of Kathrines is an amazing book written by this talented author, John Green.
