In chapters eight and nine, we see a shift in mood with Colin. In the beginning of the book, Colin feels great depression over Katherine XIX. When Colin begins the road trip, we see Colin's despair gradually drift away, especially in chapters eight and nine. Even though he does not admit his happiness to his mother over the phone in chapter nine, we know that he feels better being in Gutshot, away from Katherine XIX. Although Colin still feels sad over Katherine XIX, he begins using his feelings to do what he loves most. He turns his nineteen relationships into graphed algebraic problems.
