I am proud and aloof
I wonder if black men will ever seem equal
I hear the rattle of the halter chains
I see the barrier between white men and I
I want to be seen as more than ignorant
I am proud and aloof
I pretend to be emotionally strong
I feel sad and lonely
I touch the books in my shack that give me inspiration when I have none
I worry that I will always be on this ranch, alone and afraid
I cry for someone to understand and care for me
I am proud and aloof
I understand why men dream when they have nothing
I say I can't cause I'm black
I dream that I one day can
I try to hide my heart
I hope that one day I will be trusting enough to let others in
I am proud and aloof
*I am writing this "I am..." poem about Crooks because in school, I am reading Of Mice and Men. This assignment was made to get me to better understand this predominant character.
